What is Dual Enrollment?
![]() |
Dual enrollment is an opportunity that allows high school students to enroll in courses that allow the students to earn college credit while still being enrolled in high school. As a dual-enrolled student, you are enrolled in both high school and Patrick & Henry Community College (P&HCC).
Am I eligible?
Dual enrollment is offered to high school juniors and seniors enrolled in a participating area high school. In order to enroll in these courses, you must demonstrate competence in reading, writing, and math
How do I enroll?
Interested students should meet with their high school counselor to discuss what dual enrollment courses are available at your high school. Students can also meet with the P&HCC high school career coach to learn more about options at their high school.
What are the benefits of Dual Enrollment?
Studies show that students who earn college credits while still enrolled in high school out-perform their peers and are more likely to complete a post-secondary credential. Dual enrollment students are able to experience college-level coursework while still having learning supports provided by both their high school and P&HCC. Most importantly, it can lower the cost of post-secondary education by completing credits through the community college while still in high school.
For more information on the enrollment process or the placement testing requirements, please contact your high school career coach or the Dual Enrollment Office.
Step One:
Meet with your high school counselor to determine if dual enrollment is right for you.
Schedule a time to meet with your high school counselor to see what courses are being offered at your high school and how they will fit into your schedule for the upcoming academic year. Dual Enrollment options are listed in each school division’s Program of Studies guide.
Step Two:
Complete the Virginia Community College System Online Application.
Students must complete the application online at: https://www.apply.vccs.edu/Home/Sign_In/Logon.aspx
If you need assistance with completing the application, please stop by your high school career coach’s office and they can help you complete the application. Upon completing the application, students will receive a 7 digit student ID number. Be sure to keep this number for future reference.
Step Three:
Students must complete the Virginia Placement Test.
This test is administered in each high school or you may also complete the test on campus in our Learning Resource Center. The placement test is required to determine your eligibility for enrollment. Course requirements vary so talk to your high school counselor or P&HCC Career Coach if you are unsure if you meet specific course requirements. Below are resources to help you prepare for the VPT.

Step Four:
Registration for classes is completed at your high school.
Representatives from P&HCC will visit each class to assist students in the registration process. If you are enrolled in a course that meets on P&HCC’s campus, representatives will visit your class on the first day to get your registered.
