Upward Bound
The Upward Bound project provides year-round educational intervention programs including weekly after-school meetings, college visitations, cultural activities, and the Summer Discovery Institute. Students must maintain a 2.5 grade point average and complete a minimum of two consecutive summers on the PHCC campus. Enrollment is limited to 66 students who successfully completed the 8th grade and attend Martinsville High School, Magna Vista High School, Bassett High School, or Patrick County High School. Students must be a U.S. citizen or national or permanent resident of the United States.
During the school year, Upward Bound advisors and tutors are in contact with participants, teachers, counselors, and parents. Advisors visit students at high schools weekly. Students gain information about educational opportunities, receive help filling out college financial aid forms, complete college applications, and preparation for college entrance exams. Participants also have field trip opportunities to visit local colleges.
During the summer, students attend a six week Summer Discovery Institute (SDI). Students participate in academic classes at PHCC, career exploration, electives such as learning a second language, computers, lab science, and study skills, gain focus through cultural activities, field trips, and college visits.
Interested students should complete an "Application of Interest" and return to your guidance office. An advisor will contact you once we receive your completed form.
Upward Bound / Upward Bound Math & Science at PHCC is located in the Walker Fine Arts Student Center.
