Joyce Staples, Joe Nathan Gravely, Jr., and David Swisher, all of Martinsville, have joined the board of directors of the Patrick Henry Community College Foundation.
Staples recently retired from Patrick Henry Community College [PHCC] where she worked as an Associate Professor of English for the past 15 years. She also served as an Adjunct Professor of English for Longwood University at New College Institute for seven years and an Adjunct Professor of English at PHCC for 10 years. Prior to her employment at PHCC, Staples was an English teacher with Henry County Public Schools for 24 years.
Staples, an alumnus of Patrick Henry Community College received her Bachelor of Arts in English from Averett University; her Master of Arts in Education from Virginia Tech; and a certificate of Advanced Studies from Hollins University. She was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award and Distinguished Faculty Award from PHCC. Staples is the Financial Secretary for the Martinsville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and President of the Board of Directors of Piedmont Arts.
Gravely also recently retired from Patrick Henry Community College after serving as an Associate Professor of Nursing at Patrick Henry Community College for the past 28 years. Prior to his employment at PHCC, Gravely was a Registered Nurse at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville & Henry County for 13 years.
Gravely, an alumnus of PHCC received his Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Averett University and his Master of Science in Nursing from Radford University. He was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award and Distinguished Faculty Award from PHCC. Gravely is a member of the American Nurses Association and currently serves on the Nursing Curriculum Advisory Committee for Danville Community College. He also is a published author; SafetyNet Committee member; and serves as a Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina Diocesan Bishop for the World Assemblies of Restoration.
Swisher has been employed in various roles at Appalachian Power Company for 31 years and currently serves as the Customer Service Account Manager.
Swisher received his Bachelor of Science in Business Management from Carson Newman College. He is a Certified Energy Manager and a member of the National Association of Energy Engineers. Swisher is a former CPR Instructor with the American Red Cross and has served as a Junior Achievement Instructor at Bassett High School.

The Foundation’s Board of Directors is composed of representatives from the service area of Patrick Henry Community College who represent positive leadership and community influence, and who have an interest in using their influence on behalf of the college. Board members serve three-year terms, with the option of being reappointed once their term ends.
