PHCC is pleased to announce its support of the newly-launched Growth4VA campaign, which focuses on promoting reform and reinvestment in Virginia’s top-ranked higher education system. The campaign, backed by a partnership of higher education and business leaders, aims to help grow the Virginia economy, expand access to education and job opportunities for all Virginians, and regain Virginia’s #1 ranking for business.
Virginia’s colleges, universities, and community colleges are stepping up to help achieve these goals. By collaborating with partners in the business community, all the parties involved will work to create practical policies and creative ideas focused on four strategies:
· Make Virginia the Top State for Talent
· Become recognized as the Home of Innovators and Entrepreneurs
· Prepare Virginians for Great Jobs and Great Lives
· Provide Affordable Access for All Virginians
PHCC is working with business leaders to develop programs that lead students straight to the careers that are in high demand in the Martinsville, Henry County and Patrick County areas. This semester PHCC is launching a new workforce program for construction and craftsman training in partnership with Piedmont Mechanical, Blair Construction, and Frith Construction.
PHCC is also in the midst of developing a new physical therapist assistant program because PTAs are in high demand locally and across the country. The program is slated to begin accepting students in the fall of 2019, but PHCC is already working with multiple different employers to provide future students with on-site training opportunities at local businesses.
At the PHCC site in Patrick County, the college is launching a Siemens mechatronic boot camp this fall. The college developed this training in partnership with the Town of Stuart and the Patrick County Education Foundation.
“We are excited about this statewide initiative because it aligns perfectly with everything PHCC already stands for,” says PHCC president, Dr. Angeline Godwin. “We are always talking with industry leaders to discover ways that we can help connect our students to the rewarding careers they seek. Our new workforce construction program, the PTA program and the mechatronics boot camp are just a few examples of how we are developing pathways of success for our students.”
Growth4VA is a campaign of the Virginia Business Higher Education Council and has been endorsed by all 15 of Virginia’s public higher education institutions and the Virginia Community College System.
